Briton Bond vocalist of Wage War joins David Benites on Behind The Screams to discuss their new EP released IT CALLS ME BY NAME available now via Fearless Records. They discuss the band's return to their roots, Bond's vocal performance on the record, trying new things vocally, his influences and what made him fall in love with heavy music, where they think the industry is going and more.
Bond and Benites talked a lot about the difference in approach to the recording process of IT CALLS ME BY NAME. Bond discusses that he experimented a lot with the vocals during the studio sessions rather than focusing on checking things off a list. He highlights the freedom is brought to being able to play with new sounds and unlock things that they wouldn't have been able to if they were following a script. Bond mentioned that the ending of the track "Purify" was the result of an improvised moment and wouldn't have necessarily turned out the way it had if they had gone in with a plan in place.
Bond highlights his love for heavier vocals in this conversation; citing bands like Whitechapel and Suicide Silence as early influences for him and his excitement of getting to play around with some of these heavier sounds for tracks like "Song of the Swamp".
Another major topic that comes up in conversation between Bond and Benites is the idea of the metal community and the desire to see bands focus on building community again, focusing on lifting each other up rather than trying to compete to be on top. Bond notes that he is glad to see the scene "healing itself" and moving toward collaboration over competition, pointing to their tour with Orthodox as an example of introducing their fanbase to heavier music and encouraging other bands to follow suit with similar choices for their tours.
