It is not a secret that we are Telefunken Elektroakustik stans here at Extreme Vocal Institute and you've seen them featured in our content over the course of the last six years repeatedly. There are a lot of microphones out there and David has tested a lot of them but in the end, he always chooses Telefunken, both for live in and the studio. Recently, Extreme Vocal Institute and Telefunken teamed up to showcase how extreme vocals translate across their various dynamic and condenser microphones.
While other microphones out there leave vocalists with a very distinct sound that almost strips away the character of their individual voices, David highlights that the Telefunken mics are great at showcasing all forms of extreme vocals and leaves a lot of room for the artists to create the character and tone themselves. David tells the story of how he happened to pick up a Telefunken M81 by chance, buying one off a Berklee College of Music student and he was blown away by the depth and detail he heard in his voice that was unlike any other mic he had tried. He has since moved to using the M80 model for live purposes but still has the original M81 he bought that started it all.
David describes the Telefunken dynamic mics as "true to life" as well as "big and bold", giving your engineer everything they need in order to shape your sound to best cut through with your band on stage without losing any of the little but important details. He also highlights the importance of their incredible feedback rejection; something that plagues vocalists and engineers.
In addition, you can get the Telefunken dynamic microphones in a wide variety of colors and finishes so your mic can represent you, your band and your brand; David showcases his completely gold M80 in the video but also has a black body with gold grill and black body with silver grill.
David is an excellent resource for testing microphones with all kinds of vocals as he uses everything from ultra distorted gutturals, to shrieking high screams, to powerful belting in his music. Being able to test the limits of these microphones in every direction truly showcases how excellently made the Telefunken mics are and how well equipped they are to handle whatever you throw at them as an artist.
When it comes to condenser mics, Telefunken is best known for their ultra high end Diamond Series studio mics like the U47, 251 and C12. In this video, David showcases some of their Alchemy Series, discusses their characteristics and how extreme vocals fair with each of them, talks about owning three of the mics in the series; the TF47, TF51 and TF17 and why he gravitates towards those for his work as a vocalist specializing in all forms of vocal distortion.
Let us know if from watching these videos, you're considering grabbing one of Telefunken's incredible mics for yourself, we cannot recommend them enough!
