Watch Extreme Vocal Institute vocal coach David Benites break down how to scream like Bad Omens frontman Noah Sebastian in our latest "Scream Like" video.
David started the "How to Scream Like" series in 2020 and has covered a wide range of artists across the different subgenres of metal. This time, there is an added twist at the end. David proceeds through the process of building the scream as he normally does in this series, ending with a snippet of the popular Bad Omens track "Artificial Suicide" but also includes a version with the instrumental with the same vocal take mixed in so the viewer can hear how context supports the vocal.
While this series is designed to help break down how to get different tonalities similar to that of the artist, this is not necessarily how the artist themselves is doing the scream. David has created a version that is teachable and achievable to as many people as possible.
We often get comments on this series that express something along the lines of "Well shouldn't you be teaching us to sound like ourselves?" and while YES that is ultimately the goal for most people, part of being an educator is getting people excited about learning and sometimes the path to getting people excited about trying something new and potentially challenging to them is through giving them the tools to emulate their favorite artists.
We have an entire course called "Emulation with Purpose" in our EVI Now program on how emulation can actually be a really valuable tool for learning. For most of us, we learn how to vocalize at all in the first place through the process of emulation. It can also be a useful tool when learning extreme vocals.
Additionally, not everyone is aiming to be a vocalist and front their own band. Some people are hobbyists who want to scream along with their favorite songs in the car and that's totally valid and equally as important as those who are gunning to hit the stage and devote their entire lives to this art form.
